This comprehensive bundle of water safety resources has been designed to help children and young people understand the risks of entering open water and how to stay safe around rivers, lakes, canals, and the sea. Through engaging, age-appropriate lessons, activities, and discussion prompts, learners are guided to recognise hazards, make safe decisions, and know what to do in an emergency near water.

With summer approaching and many families and unaccompanied young people spending more time outdoors, these lessons are especially important. Sadly, a number of tragedies occur every year when individuals underestimate the dangers of open water. This resource aims to build awareness, confidence, and life-saving knowledge that could prevent accidents and save lives.

How To Use

  • Use the lessons as part of a PSHE, safety, or wellbeing curriculum in schools, youth groups, or community settings.
  • Use the activities and scenarios to help learners practise decision-making and identify safe behaviours.
  • Use videos, discussions, or role-play exercises to reinforce key messages about what to do in an emergency (such as calling for help and avoiding entering the water yourself).
  • Adapt the resources to suit different age groups, and revisit key messages regularly - especially ahead of warmer months or school holidays.

These resources are designed to be flexible, engaging, and practical, helping young people develop the awareness and skills they need to stay safe around water.
