Description
Every year, the Fire and Rescue Services and the Coastguard are called out to reports of people who are injured or who have got into difficulty after jumping from a height into open water. This is called ‘Tombstoning’. This Personal Social Health and Economic (PSHE) lesson explores the dangers of tombstoning and how it could change a person’s life. This is a discussion-based lesson which will give pupils the opportunity to ask questions and offer their opinions.
How To Use
This lesson plan provides guidance on how to use the accompanying 'Tombstoning - Dangers and Consequences' presentation. Through delivery of this lesson, pupils will learn the dangers of tombstoning. Prior to the lesson it would be beneficial to note places in the local area which are popular tombstoning hot spots and to research whether there have been any injuries or fatalities locally, this will help to reiterate the fact that it could happen to them, it’s not just something that happens far away from home. Enquire beforehand whether any pupil has been previously affected by tombstoning or other water related incidents either physically or emotionally, assess well-being of any affected individuals before continuing with the lesson. It is also important to be mindful of any wheelchair users during this session and to approach the topic sensitively.
