This presentation uses the real-life story shared in Nia's Story to educate young people about the dangers and consequences of fire-setting behaviour. Through Nia’s experience, participants learn how a seemingly small act of playing with fire can have devastating and far-reaching consequences, including injury, loss of life, environmental damage, criminal convictions, and long-term impacts on families, communities, and emergency services.
The presentation has been deliberately broken down into short sections, allowing young people time to pause, reflect, and discuss key messages as the story unfolds. Rather than presenting the entire story at once, each section provides opportunities to explore Nia’s decisions, consider alternative choices, and understand the consequences of those choices before moving on. This reflective approach encourages active participation, critical thinking, and personal learning, helping young people relate the lessons to their own experiences and future decision-making.
How To Use
- Suitable for young people aged 12+ and those who have displayed fire-setting behaviour or may be at risk of engaging in unsafe fire-related activities.
- Introduce the session by explaining that Nia's story is a true account and contains themes of injury, death, imprisonment, and the consequences of unsafe choices.
- Deliver the presentation in sections, pausing regularly to encourage discussion and reflection on the decisions made, the consequences that followed, and alternative safer choices.
- Use the interactive "Choice" slides to explore decision-making, peer pressure, personal responsibility, and strategies for leaving unsafe situations.
- Conclude by reinforcing key fire safety messages and encouraging young people to make safe, positive choices and seek support from trusted adults when needed.
