This presentation uses Nia’s real-life story to explore the consequences of fire-setting behaviour. Through a first-person account, young people follow the events that led to a fire, the death of another person, and the subsequent criminal justice outcomes. The resource encourages reflection on decision-making, personal responsibility, risk-taking, empathy, and the long-term impact of fire-setting on individuals, families, victims, and communities.

How To Use

Work through the presentation with the young person, stopping at key points to discuss Nia’s decisions, thoughts, and actions. Use open questions to explore risks, consequences, alternative choices, and the impact on those affected by the incident. The presentation can be delivered as a complete session or used flexibly to focus on specific themes such as arson, peer influence, criminal consequences, victim impact, restorative justice, and making safer choices in the future.

There is also a video version of this story that can be found below under 'Related Resources'. The lesson plan is also available by scrolling down this page.
