Fire Safety
30 mins
Last reviewed: 21 Jul 26

This activity uses Nia's real-life account of a fire-setting incident she was involved in, which tragically resulted in the death of a 35-year-old man. It helps young people explore the real-life consequences of fire-setting, including the impact on victims, families, communities, and the individuals responsible. The activity encourages discussion around decision-making, responsibility, consequences, and empathy.

How To Use

Ask the young person to read the story, or read it together, and identify the key events. Use open questions to explore what happened, who was affected, how the incident could have been prevented, and the short- and long-term consequences for everyone involved. Encourage reflection on how different choices may have led to a different outcome. This activity can be used as a discussion starter or alongside other fire safety intervention resources.

The story can be found below as a presentation.

There is also a video version of the story if this is more suitable for delivery of this session. This can also be found below under 'Related Resources'.
