This engaging and interactive fire safety lesson helps Year 2 pupils learn how to recognise fire hazards, stay safe in the event of a fire, and understand the important role of firefighters in keeping communities safe. Through hazard-spotting activities, fire escape planning, discussions, and practical demonstrations, children develop essential fire safety knowledge, including the importance of smoke alarms, calling 999 in an emergency, the "Get Out, Stay Out" message, and the STOP, DROP & ROLL procedure. This lesson was created by Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service to support schools in delivering age-appropriate safety education.
How To Use
This 40-minute lesson is suitable for Year 2 pupils (ages 6-7) and can be delivered by classroom teachers using the accompanying presentation and activity resources. Teachers guide pupils through identifying fire hazards, exploring fire escape plans, discussing emergency actions, and practising key safety messages. The lesson can be delivered independently without a Fire and Rescue Service representative and provides opportunities for discussion, assessment, and home learning activities that encourage children to share fire safety messages with their families.
