This sequencing activity is based on the fire safety story Know Your Way Out and helps children understand the importance of recognising danger and escaping safely. Using key moments from the story, children learn what happens when a fire starts, how a smoke alarm alerts people, and why it is important to get out and stay out. The activity reinforces essential fire safety messages in a simple, visual, and engaging way.
How To Use
This activity is ideal for younger children and can be used in classrooms or at home alongside the story. Adults can:
- Ask children to colour in the pictures before cutting them out
- Support children to place the images in the correct order to retell the story
- Help children match captions to the correct pictures
- Discuss what the characters did and why leaving the building quickly is important
Reinforce key messages such as recognising a smoke alarm, shouting to alert others, and getting out and staying out
A Makaton version of the book can be found below and there is also a lesson plan to support with delivery of the book and this activity.
