This presentation is for an engaging Year 1 road safety lesson helps children learn how to stay safe when travelling in vehicles and when walking near roads. Through discussion and interactive activities, pupils explore the importance of wearing seatbelts and using appropriate car seats, walking safely with a trusted adult, recognising hazards such as driveways, and understanding how bright and reflective clothing helps them to be seen. The lesson also introduces the role of firefighters and emergency services in keeping communities safe. This lesson was developed by Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service and Staffordshire Safer Roads Partnership.

How To Use

This 40-minute lesson is suitable for Year 1 (ages 5-6) and can be delivered by a teacher or a member of the fire and rescue service. Use the accompanying presentation or printed images to guide discussions and activities. Encourage pupils to share their own experiences of travelling to school, participate in practical demonstrations and questioning, and reinforce key safety messages throughout the lesson. The session can be used as part of PSHE, personal safety, or road safety education and includes opportunities for assessment, reflection, and home learning to extend pupils’ understanding beyond the classroom.
