This lesson raises awareness of key summer safety issues through a Fire and Rescue Service context. Pupils learn how to stay safe around open water, including what to do if they or others get into difficulty, using the Float to Live and Phone, Float, Throw guidance. The session also explores wildfires - how they start, their impact, and how they can be prevented - as well as anti-social behaviour, focusing on deliberate fire‑setting, hoax calls, and attacks on firefighters. Students are encouraged to understand risks, consequences, and responsible choices to help keep themselves and their community safe.

How To Use

Start with water safety, reinforcing key messages such as Float to Live and Phone, Float, Throw, and ensuring pupils understand not to enter the water to rescue others. Continue with wildfires, discussing how they start, their impact, and how they can be prevented, with an emphasis on reporting fires safely.

Conclude with anti-social behaviour, highlighting the real consequences of deliberate fire-setting, hoax calls, and attacks on firefighters. Use the final knowledge check to review learning and assess pupil understanding.

The lesson plan can be found a little further down this page.
