Fire Safety

This lesson introduces pupils to how firefighting has changed since the Great Fire of London in 1666. Children explore the basic equipment used in the past, learn why the fire spread so quickly, and compare this with the specialist tools and trained fire service we have today. Through discussion and a cut‑and‑stick sorting activity, pupils develop an understanding of historical change and modern emergency services.

How To Use

Use the accompanying presentation to explain what firefighting looked like in 1666 and why people struggled to control the fire. Then introduce modern firefighting equipment and training, guiding pupils to compare past and present. After the discussion, pupils complete the worksheet by sorting images into “then” and “now,” with support or extension tasks as needed. Finish the lesson with a whole‑class conversation about whether fire safety was better in 1666 or today and why.
