This lesson plan outlines how to deliver a social story session about fire safety. Social stories are an effective tool when working with students with SEND. The stories are designed to deliver appropriate knowledge and understanding of how to react in different situations they encounter through simple messaging, images and repetition. Designed and created by Norfolk Fire Service, this story helps to embed knowledge about the appropriate use of fire and what they should do if they find fire-making equipment.
How To Use
This resource should be used in a 1:1 situation with students with SEND that may have shown an interest in fire and done so with risk. The short story on the accompanying presentation should be read and shared with the student and then displayed somewhere so that the child can regularly see it. The activity can also be revisited regularly to further embed the messaging. There is also an extension activity to complete, allowing the student to further develop their understanding.
