Introducing the Great Fire of London is an engaging, cross-curricular lesson that introduces pupils to one of the most significant events in British history. Through questioning, discussion and historical enquiry, pupils explore the causes and impact of the Great Fire of London while developing an understanding of how firefighting and fire safety have changed over time. This lesson has been mapped to the Northern Ireland Curriculum, supporting learning within The World Around Us (Change Over Time), Language and Literacy and PDMU.

How To Use

Begin by discussing what pupils already know about the Great Fire of London and encourage them to share their ideas. Use this discussion to help pupils generate questions about the event and identify what they would like to learn.

Pupils then create and record their own historical enquiry questions, which can be used to guide future learning about the Great Fire of London. Conclude by sharing questions as a class and discussing how life, firefighting and fire safety differ today compared with 1666.

The background information sheet for the lesson can be found below.
