This engaging water safety lesson helps pupils explore the effects of cold water on the body through a practical experiment and discussion-based learning. Pupils will learn about cold water shock, how it can affect their ability to swim, and the important steps to take if they unexpectedly enter cold water. The lesson promotes risk awareness and equips children with potentially lifesaving water safety knowledge.
How To Use
Use the accompanying presentation and experiment worksheet (these can be found below) to guide pupils through the lesson. Begin by discussing how the body might react when suddenly exposed to cold water before introducing the concept of cold water shock. Pupils then take part in a supervised practical activity, recording their predictions and observations. Use the presentation to explain the science behind cold water shock and reinforce key safety messages. Conclude with discussion, the RNLI video and a review of the ‘Float to Live’ advice. The extension and home learning activities can be used to further develop pupils’ understanding of water safety.
