Description
This lesson was created by North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and is aimed at KS2 children aged between 7 and 11. At this age, more children will start to walk to school alone, and they are more likely to be out and about on their bikes and scooters, not always with adult supervision. They need to know about the hazards that they face as vulnerable road users and this lesson and accompanying presentation have been designed to deliver these key safety messages. After looking at the hazards on the roads, the session addresses the risks that face pedestrians, cyclists and scooter users. The accompanying presentation for this session is packed full of advice for when the children are near roads and crossing roads along with specific safety advice for using bikes and scooters. At the end of the lesson is an engaging video that illustrates why speed matters. The presentation is 17 slides and should take approximately 30 minutes to deliver depending upon participation from the children.
How To Use
Use this lesson to deliver key objectives from PSHE curriculum. These safety objectives are part of the 'Keeping Safe' theme in the curriculum and aim to equip KS2 children with the knowledge and understanding to help them make safer behaviour decisions in hazardous environments. Use the accompanying presentation to deliver the key information and engage the children with the activities and videos featured.
