A safety lesson that can be used with any KS3 and KS4 class to help them think about the importance of writing risk assessments before science practicals. The lesson begins by getting students to think about hazards and risks in everyday situations before making a risk assessment for a specific scientific experiment.

How To Use

Students are invited to describe the difference between a hazard and a risk. They then identify how to reduce the risk in everyday situations before focusing on specific scientific experiments.  Students then write a risk assessment for a scientific experiment and explain how risks can be reduced.

Click on 'Resource 1' below to find the blank risk assessment template that students complete as part of the lesson. 'Resource 2' is the sheet of different fire safety scenarios; details of how to use this sheet as part of the lesson are also included in the plan.
