In this lesson pupils will come to understand the crucial rules when crossing level crossings and why misuse of crossings is dangerous for themselves and others. The pupils are introduced to facts about British Railways, the dangers that surround the railways and will have the opportunity to listen to the experiences of different employees who work closely with British Railways. The pupils will have the opportunity to take part in tasks while watching a video clip before setting out to show what they have learned by creating a safety poster or a group presentation.
How To Use
This lesson can be adapted or broken up into sections depending on the time available for delivery. There are two tasks that focus on answering questions from the accompanying video and a third task that asks the children to create a poster or presentation about railway safety. The lesson could be delivered in 1 hour if task 3 is not included. Adding task 3 and the extension task would require approximately 3 hours.
There is a video needed for the lesson that can be found by clicking on 'Resource 1' below. 'Resource 2' is the worksheet for Task 1 - answering questions about Carol's experiences. 'Resource 3' is the worksheet for Task 2 - answering questions about level crossings. 'Resource 4' is a presentation to accompany the lesson and support delivery.
