This engaging KS4 Fire Safety lesson helps students understand the most common causes of accidental fires in the home and the actions that can be taken to prevent them. Through discussions, risk-assessment activities and scenario-based learning, students explore fire hazards such as cooking, electrical equipment, candles, smoking materials and heating sources. The lesson develops awareness of fire prevention, emergency response and the importance of having a fire escape plan. This resource was created by Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service.

How To Use

This 60-minute lesson is designed to be delivered by a class teacher in the absence of a fire and rescue service professional. Use the mind-mapping activity to explore students' existing knowledge and identify misconceptions about fire safety. The fire prevention and scenario-based activities encourage discussion about common fire risks, practical prevention measures and appropriate actions in an emergency. The lesson provides opportunities to reinforce key safety messages, promote independent decision-making and increase awareness of fire risks in the home.
