The Knots and Lines activity introduces cadets to essential fire‑service rope skills, helping them understand what knots are, why they are used, and how different knots support operational tasks. Cadets learn the key features of a good knot, the standard terminology for parts of a rope, and how to correctly tie common knots such as the overhand knot, half hitch, figure of eight, and double sheet bend. This practical session builds confidence, coordination, and problem‑solving, while reinforcing knowledge needed for safe lifting, securing, and handling equipment in fire‑service environments.

How To Use

You’ll each get a rope and learn how to tie important knots used in the fire service. Your instructor will show you what the different rope parts are called - like the running end and bight - and explain what makes a knot safe and reliable.

Watch the demonstration, then practise tying each knot yourself. Repeat them until they feel natural. You’ll learn knots such as the overhand knot, half hitch, figure of eight, and double sheet bend, and why firefighters use them.
