This engaging KS3/KS4 lesson helps students understand what deliberate fire-setting (arson) is, why people may choose to start fires, and the serious consequences these actions can have for individuals, communities, the environment and emergency services. Through quizzes, discussions and scenario-based activities, young people explore the risks associated with deliberate fires, the influence of peer pressure, and the importance of making safe and responsible decisions. How To Use
This 60-minute lesson can be delivered by a class teacher in the absence of a fire and rescue service professional. Begin with the fire quiz to explore students' existing knowledge and challenge misconceptions about deliberate fires. Use the peer pressure scenarios to encourage discussion around risk-taking behaviours and strategies for resisting pressure from others. Finish with the campaign activity, where students create resources to raise awareness of the consequences of deliberate fire-setting. The lesson promotes discussion, critical thinking and positive behaviour change while reinforcing key fire safety messages.
