Float to Live RNLI Video

Play the RNLI video after discussing the hazards of open water and the dangers of cold water shock. Ask pupils to watch carefully and identify the five key steps of the Float to Live technique. After viewing, recap the steps and discuss how this advice could help someone stay safe in an emergency situation. If video equipment is unavailable, the five steps can be explored through discussion instead.

• Tilt your head back with your ears submerged.
• Relax and try to breathe normally.
• Move your hands to help you stay afloat.
• Once the initial shock has passed, call for help or swim to safety.
• In an emergency, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.
