StayWise share fire safety messaging to mark World Book Night

Families, educators, and community organisations came together at Lock Park, Redcar on Thursday 23 April to celebrate World Book Night at an event organised by Redcar and Cleveland Libraries.

The event showcased the power of storytelling and partnership, with support from Tees Valley Wildlife Trust, Feel Good Redcar, Thrive at Five (National Literacy Trust), Cleveland Fire Brigade, and StayWise. Activities encouraged a love of reading while sharing important safety and wellbeing messages with the local community.

NFCC Education Coordinator Rita Richardson dressed as “Rita the Super Hero Smoke Alarm”, helping to bring fire safety learning to life.

Rita shared the “Know Your Way Out” book alongside practical resources available on the StayWise website, engaging families, professionals, and educators in conversations about home safety and emergency planning.

Rita was joined by a surprise guest appearance from Darth Vader, alongside representatives from Cleveland Fire Brigade, creating a memorable experience that captured children’s attention and reinforced key safety messages.

The event highlighted how creativity, collaboration and community spirit can inspire learning, promote safety, and make reading accessible and enjoyable for all.
