Dress the Firefighter is an interactive fire safety activity for Early Years and KS1/2 pupils. Children learn that firefighters wear specialist Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to protect themselves from dangers such as heat, smoke and falling objects. The activity helps pupils understand that firefighters are trained professionals and that children should never attempt to fight fires themselves. Pupils identify and sort firefighter equipment, dress a firefighter with the correct PPE, and learn what to do if they discover a fire.

How To Use

  • Introduce the firefighter image and explain that firefighters wear special PPE to keep themselves safe.
  • Discuss the role of firefighters and ask pupils questions about why protective clothing is important.
  • Provide the cut-out clothing items and ask pupils to sort them into:
    • Firefighter equipment
    • Not firefighter equipment
  • Help pupils dress the firefighter using the correct PPE items and discuss the purpose of each piece of equipment.
  • Reinforce the key safety message that children are not firefighters and should get away, stay away and tell an adult if they discover a fire.
  • Finish with a short quiz or discussion to check understanding and reinforce learning.
