The aim of this session is to provide Fire Cadets with an understanding of fire and rescue service radio procedures and communications.

The key objectives covered are Fire Cadets to be able to:

  • Identify where calls and radio communications are handled for your Fire and Rescue Service.
  • Explain the different methods used to communicate on the fire ground.
  • Identify circumstances when a hand held radio may need to be used.
  • Demonstrate the use of the phonetic alphabet.
  • Send and receive a radio message using a hand held radio following correct procedures.

How To Use

This is the sixth session in Module 4 - Operational Drills. Fire Cadets must have undertaken manual handling and basic health and safety training.  Appropriate PPE should be issued and in good condition. Operational equipment should be tested and approved before use and cadet records should be reviewed for known medical conditions and physical limitations.

Supporting Items:

There is a useful poster that summarises the do's and don'ts when using a radio and also has a reminder of the phonetic alphabet for cadets. This can be found by clicking on 'Resource 1'.
