Ben and Katy are playing and having fun but the fun soon ends when Katy starts playing with matches. Find out how the family make a quick escape and get help from the fire and rescue service.  Widgit symbols are used in this story as a simple alternative to the text.

How To Use

This book covers both literacy and PSHE objectives when delivered with the narrative and support notes provided. It highlights the importance of: knowing about fire risks, having working smoke alarms and an escape plan, following your instincts when something isn't safe and how to get help when it is needed.

For Special Educational Needs

Widgit is a symbol-based language, it uses pictorial symbols, either as an alternative to text, or to accompany it. Although Widgit symbols are primarily designed to give people with learning difficulties a simple alternative to text, they also prove beneficial to a wider range of people, such as people with low literacy levels or those who don't use English as a first language. In this engaging story, Widgit symbols are used to highlight the dangers of lighters and matches and to raise awareness of how a seemingly harmless game can lead to disaster. Through the use of Widgit symbols in this book, individuals are given the opportunity to develop their language and comprehension skills, whilst also developing their knowledge of important fire safety messages.
